Every year in Provence, more than 70,000 acres of lavender are cultivated, transforming the countryside into a sea of fragrant purple. The peak bloom is usually late June to early July but, because of recent heat waves, a lot has already been harvested this year. Yesterday we drove northeast to the town of Sault in search of lavender, and we weren’t disappointed. Looking down across the valley there were still fields of lavender to be seen everywhere. On the way back, we drove through the spectacular Gorge de la Nesque, a UNESCO site with incredible scenery. We were advised to plan our day so that we drove from east to west, to be on the inside of the road rather than on the edge – and I’m very, very glad we did!
